GREAT MATRICES, BUT WHO IS THE BEST OF THE BEST?

(At the bottom of this page, please see summary of results with updated commentary that was posted after the November 4, 2008 election.)

This website focuses primarily on attempts to locate the Ark of the Covenant via the Torah Codes. However the purpose of that search is, in part, an attempt to learn if the Torah Code really does have material encoded that lays out the future of the world similar to the way DNA determines the development of a life form.

Success in looking for events in the past (that were allegedly prerecorded over 3,000 years ago) is often clouded by issues of procedure or loose Hebrew spelling rules for transliterations. In an attempt to learn whether or not the Torah Code names U.S. Presidents, my son (David Roffman) conducted a Science Fair project in late 2005. His results are summarized as the last two tables on this page, and on slide 33 in Part 1 of my slide show. The same show (slides 27-29) lays out the (Bill) Clinton-Lewinski scandal in Torah Codes.

The three 3-part matrices below deal with top three candidates for the U.S. Presidency as of March 6, 2008 (John McCain, Hilary Clinton and Barak Obama). Each combined matrix matches a candidate at his or her lowest ELS with the 4-letter Hebrew word for President; shows the smallest matrix (best match in terms of size) with the candidate and the same word for President (despite the ELS rank of the candidate's name); and finally shows whether a better match can actually found in a non-religious text - a scrambled version of the Torah which serves as the control text on CodeFinder software. Note that it is not unusual for better finds to be discovered in the Control. However, as my son's results for previous U.S. Presidents indicate in the last two tables of this page, we have found that there is a general trend for slightly better results to be in the Torah. A far more complex study with much more significant results was conducted by Dr. Robert Haralick, Distinguished Professor at the City of New York Graduate Studies Computer Science Department.

THE 2008 U.S. PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN

1. John McCain in Torah at Minimum Skip with President. Rules:

(1) No row split allowed.

(2) John McCain must be at lowest skip. This results in a matrix that requires 176 letters.

(3) Since Hebrew rarely uses double consonants, only one letter is used to simulate the double C in McCain. Either kuf or kaf could be used.

(4) Since there is no letter J in Hebrew, the letter yud is used to denote this letter, as is the general rule in Hebrew.

(5) More than one pass through the Torah (a wrapped matrix) is allowed.

p = .2 or one chance in 5 that this is here by chance alone (not significant at all).

2. Smallest (best match) in Torah of John McCain with President. Rules:

(1) No row split allowed.

(2) Since Hebrew rarely uses double consonants, only one letter is used to simulate the double C in McCain. Either kuf or kaf could be used.

(3) Since there is no letter J in Hebrew, the letter yud is used to denote this letter, as is the general rule in Hebrew.

(4) More than one pass through the Torah (a wrapped matrix) is allowed.
(5) No limitations are placed with respect to skip rank of the 8-letter John McCain, however here the match is with the 5^th lowest ELS. However, the word for President is at its minimum skip in Torah (+1). This results in a matrix that only requires 32 letters. The smaller the matrix area, the better the match. This is a suberb match. P = .0356 or 1 chance in 28 that this is due to chance alone. This is better than Obama's smallest matrix, but not as good as his lowest ELS matrix.

3. John McCain in Control (Scrambled Torah - not religious text): Rules:

(1) No row split allowed. (2) John McCain must be at lowest skip. This results in a matrix that requires only 140 letters - less than in the Torah with this set of rules. (3) Since Hebrew rarely uses double consonants, only one letter is used to simulate the double C in McCain. Either kuf or kaf could be used. (4) Since there is no letter J in Hebrew, the letter yud is used to denote this letter, as is the general rule in Hebrew. (5) More than one pass through the Control (a wrapped matrix) is allowed. Each pass involves 305,805 letters - the same number of letters as in Torah. This matrix clearly demonstrates the urgent need to use a control text in any Codes experiment. Note: Although the Torah clearly beats the control text (scrambled Torah) in the smallest matrix category, the Control text on CodeFinder (used in this experiment) only has the word used for President (pronounced nasey - the same word as prince spelled nun sin yud alef) 5 times at skip +1. The Torah has this word - 68 times as skip +1. Therefore matches with an open text word for president are more likely to occur in Torah until a better control is made available.

4. H. Clinton in Torah at Minimum Skip with President. Rules:

(1) No row split allowed.

(2) H. Clinton must be at lowest skip. This results in a matrix that requires 120 letters.

(3) For the letter C either kuf or kaf could be used. For the letter T either tav or tet could be used.

(4) More than one pass through the Torah (a wrapped matrix) is allowed.

(5) Mrs. Clinton's first initial was required because her husband was a previous President.

P = .0264 or 1 chance in 38 that this is an accident.

5. H. Clinton in Torah in Smallest Matrix with President. Rules:

(1) No row split allowed.

(2) ELS rank of H. Clinton mentioned (it was a worst showing for this category at 28th place), but low rank not required. As was the case with John McCain, this results in a matrix that requires only 32 letters - but it does not include an open text inclusion of the word for President (wheras the last letter of John McCain's name started the open text use of the word for President).

(3) For the letter C either kuf or kaf could be used. For the letter T either tav or tet could be used.

(4) More than one pass through the Torah (a wrapped matrix) is allowed.

(5) Mrs. Clinton's first initial was required because her husband was a previous President.

P = essentially .999, a virtual certainty to find such a matrix (it's not significant at all).

6. H. Clinton in the Control at Minimum Skip with President. Rules:

(1) No row split allowed. (2) H. Clinton must be at lowest skip. This results in a matrix that requires only 52 letters - less than in the Torah with this set of rules. (3) For letter C either kuf or kaf could be used. (4) For letter T either tav or tet could be used. (5) More than one pass through the Control (a wrapped matrix) is allowed. Each pass involves 305,805 letters - the same number of letters as in Torah. This matrix again clearly demonstrates the urgent need to use a control text in any Codes experiment.

7. Barak Obama in Torah at Minimum Skip With President. Rules:

(1) No row split allowed. (2) Barak Obama must be at lowest skip. This results in a matrix that requires only 72 letters - the best matrix in this category for the three candidates. (3) For the letter K either kuf or kaf could be used. (4) More than one pass through the Torah (a wrapped matrix) is allowed. This matrix had a p of .0178 or 1 chance in 56. It was thus better than McCain's best matrix, which had a "p" of .04 ot 1 chance in 25.

8. Barak Obama in Torah in Smallest (best) matrix with President. Rules:

(1) No row split allowed. (2) Barak Obama at any skip rank, however here the match of terms is based on the 14th lowest skip of Barak Obama. This results in a matrix that (as was seen with John McCain and H. Clinton) requires only 32 letters. (3) For letter K either kuf or kaf could be used. (4) More than one pass through the Torah (a wrapped matrix) is allowed. The word for President is at minimum skip in Torah, however it is backwards (at skip -1) whereas in the smallest John McCain matrix it was forward (open text - which was a better match). P = .011or one chance in 9 that this is here by chance alone. This is not significant.

9. Barak Obama at Minimum Skip in the Control With President. Rules:

(1) No row split allowed. (2) Barak Obama must be at lowest skip. This results in a matrix that requires only 48 letters - again less than in the Torah with this set of rules. (3) For letter K either kuf or kaf could be used. (4) More than one pass through the Control (a wrapped matrix) is allowed. This matrix again clearly demonstrates the urgent need to use a control text in any Codes experiment. IF MORE THAN ONE TORAH PASS IS ALLOWED (WRAPPED MATRICES), THE WORD FOR PRESIDENT CAN BE FOUND IN SEQUENCE WITH JOHN McCAIN, BARAK OBAMA, AND CLINTON

As can be seen on the left, President Obama came up three times, and President Clinton came up once. But the spelling for Clinton is different here than the transliteration used with H. Clinton because that name did did not come up in direct sequence with President (despite Bill Clinton's election to that office).

AND THE WINNER IS? (We already know on this update of November 5, 2008)

Most Torah Code researchers place the greatest emphasis on the first, or lowest ELS of an axis term. This is certainly my own policy, and is reflected on the spreadsheets that I use to compute probability. There I divide whatever significance is initially computed by the ELS rank of the axis term. So if something looks like there is one chance in 100 that we would find it, but the axis term is only the 4th lowest skip, I divide 100 by 4 to reach a value of one chance in 25 (P=0.25). As is seen above, the winner in this category is.... Barack Obama. At minimum ELS, it took 72 letters to put his name in a matrix with President. In second place was Hilary Clinton - 120 letters, and last was John McCain - 176 letters. In the category of smallest matrix, all three candidates could be found in a 32-letter box. McCain's president had the actual open text word for president, Obama's president had the word backwards at skip -1, and Clinton's president was the worst with president at an angle. However, Israeli newspapers settled on different transliterations of the McCain and Barack Obama names, a frequent problem in Codes research. Further compounding the issue, though unknown to the vast majority of Americans, is the fact that while living in Indonesia, Barak Obama went by the name Barry Soetoro. Only word can properly summarize the significance of this.....OY!!!!
